Periodontal disease is infection and inflammation of the gums. It can cause gum recession, bone and tooth loss. High blood sugars cause inflammation of the gums and promote infection.

Common signs of periodontal disease are gums that are swollen and bleed easily. Chronic high blood sugar can also cause yeast infections in the mouth and dental caries.
It is important to:
- Control your blood glucose
- Keep your gums healthy by brushing and flossing your teeth
- See your dentist and dental hygienist regularly
- Don’t smoke
